Downloading

For many instruments an RTF (Rich Text Format) version is available for downloading (links will appear in your search results or browse list for an instrument if an RTF version is available).

You can launch the RTF version of an instrument if you have suitable word processing software installed on your computer (ie. any product which can read the RTF version), and your Internet Browser is correctly configured to launch the appropriate software. The method for doing this depends on (1) the Internet browser you are using (eg. Netscape, Internet Explorer); (2) the version of the browser (eg. Netscape Versions 2 or 3, Internet Explorer Versions 3 or 4); and (3) the platform you are on (eg. Windows, Windows 95, Windows/NT, Macintosh).

Basically each browser must be set up to launch a "helper" application when a link to a document with an ".rtf" extension is invoked. This requires four pieces of information, as follows:

Mime type and subtype: - application/rtf;
Application: - eg. MS Word, Word Perfect, or AmiPro;
Extension: - .rtf;
Action: - Launch.

Refer to the documentation for your browser for more information. Note that some Browsers such as Internet Explorer on Windows/NT may come correctly configured, and may be able to display an RTF version of an instrument without launching a separate word processing application.

Here are some sample instructions for defining a Helper (Netscape Version 3):

Select Options on menu bar
.Select General Preferences
..Select the Helpers tag
...Select New option
....Enter Mime type and subtype (eg. "application/rtf")
.....Enter the extension (ie.".rtf")
......Identify your word processor (eg. select Browse and locate it)
.......Ensure File type selected is "TEXT"
........Ensure the "Launch Application" button is selected
.........Click on Apply, and then OK.

Once this is done for the ".rtf" extension you should be able to open instruments which have these links displayed.

NOTE: The text versions of instruments contained on this Register are not authoritative. They are provided to assist users in searching the Register. Text versions are currently available for most instruments made from 1991 onwards.
